The Tension Between Inclusiveness and Social Justice in Playback Theatre
with Jo Salas
Four Zoom sessions:
November 1, 2, 15 & 16
9am-12pm ET

The idea of inclusiveness has always been central in Playback Theatre. As conductors, company leaders, and teachers we work hard to make sure that everyone present is included and respected. We do this not only because it’s fair, but also because we know that the richness and the creativity of the group is strongest when everyone participates.
Playback Theatre practice also promotes the awareness of social justice issues. Our training prepares us to recognize, comprehend, and address injustice through sharing stories.
There are times when these two values, inclusiveness and social justice, seem to be in conflict, for example when an unjust political situation calls for some stories or tellers to receive more attention than others, as an interim step toward justice.
This online workshop (first presented in conjunction with PT Leadership in 2023, then as a panel at the international conference in South Africa) is an opportunity for Playback Theatre leaders and practitioners to explore this urgent topic together, seeking an understanding that promotes both courage and kindness.
Participants are expected to commit to full presence during each session by being punctual and keeping their cameras on.
